Interesting post Fozza. Measurements of willingness to pay (WTP) are often extremely unreliable. But even if the the figures obtained are reliable (let's assume they are), isn't it a mistake to expect that all of the WTP would be captured by the toll road operator? Won't your $9,727 of WTP (or whatever else it might be) have to be shared with the vehicle manufacturers and possibly others (eg. via registration and insurance)? Won't the manufacturers capture most of the WTP? How can we make any estimation of the proportion of WTP toll operators might be expected to receive without knowing what the additional costs of owning & operating a driverless car will be? My point is that I don't think you can use the study to make any sensible estimation of what proportion of WTP the toll road operator will capture. All it shows is that there is some WTP -- how it gets divided up is another story. Cheers.
