It didn't. Will it in 2017? No it won't...
Anyone who understands the derivatives market knows that $1.5 quadrillion isn't a number to focus on. If it was $3 quadrillion I still wouldn't be interested. Gross notional outstanding values for derivative contracts tells us nothing about the risk. (If you quoted the net uncollateralised outstandings by counterparty, then we would know whether to worry or not... most likely not.)
In the same way explorers waved shiny beads in front of the natives, quoting such large numbers is a great way to gull the naive.
Find a better reason to invest in gold!
