British guns and firepower could not be matched by the locals. Maybe the locals even thought they would come and go in peace. No need for you to re-write history Bunny, the Brits along with others were imperialists invading countries all over the globe. So much so that that even the American settlers who along with British firepower invaded North America had to fight a war of independence to break away from them. India also comes to mind. This caused the Brits to re-think their approach to the colonies and gave autonomy of govt eventually to other Commonwealth nations including Australia with the monarch as head of State.
