Fact checking Trump's speech, page-8

“Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered, but the jobs left and the factories closed.”

There is no empirical evidence that the D.C. area got rich off the rest of the country, as Trump suggests.

Did the people see the same incomes as suggested by the statistics, it is the media after all. Apparent double speak here.

"People either work for or lobby the federal government, and that was especially enhanced by the post-9/11 growth in defense and security contracts."

"Though growth has slowed in recent years, in part because of reductions in defense spending."

So either defense spending does or does not count towards the growth of Washington?

Also perhaps those employed are seeing higher incomes then the average individual.
Much like the politicians here, what is their average wage compared to other individuals.

Ultimately perhaps it is best a question asked to President Trump exactly what was meant by this comment. Reading this article merely presents the writers point of view and their interpretation and biases etc.
