Murray Cod are sold domestically for approximately $20/kg landed and fetch up to $50/kg into Asian markets. Murray Gold recently had aspirations to export 5000 tonnes per year, which was to be bag doored into ASX company CPS. This arrangement was based on a coop agreement with private aquaculture companies. This seems to have stalled given the most important aspect here is water allocation which imo has been their undoing...
Existing grain growers, cotton farmers and other agriculture companies that posses highly sort after water allocations imo have the ability to sustainably meet supply and demand requirements of export markets. Matt Ryan stated this was a major constraint in previous ABC podcasts and also highlighted that Ag farmers are able to utilise their water allocation twice by pumping their water first into their dams, fish value add to the water which is then later pumped onto their fields which replaces carbon in their soils and increases potential yields.
Fishpac seem to be the only export packaging company and boast less than 1% mortality rates. Based on my son's school assignment last year, which was on the back of the "joining dots thread" exporting and packaging costs are $8/kg. It takes 12 months to grow a table sized fish ideal for export. Please DYOR here!
