How can laterites be failing when MRE produced over 30kt of nickel during 2006? Sure the initial capex and ongoing maintenance is high, but the returns are also high ... with plant technologies maturing, surely the dawn of the laterite deposit upon us. If MREs heap leach process works, the death knell for sulphides may start to ring...
2007 will be an interesting year! I guess it all depends on the number of (and access to) new sulphide deposits compared with the success of laterite extraction methodologies.
