We certainly do have plenty of choices other than coal.

Yet why gear up for even more damage in the future by adding to the choice of poisons - remember that any of those alternatives you mentioned, no matter how appealingly green they sound, also have their carbon debt downsides - it takes energy from somewhere to build their high tech components.

Makes more sense imv to start healing the mess that has been made by industry to date of our country's lungs by immediately planting a LOT more trees which will attract rainfall and reduce CO2 in the atmosphere.

And concurrently start looking at clever ways to reduce population size and demand on energy rich consumer goods whilst retaining a healthy economy. Small is smart and beautiful, big and ugly will kill us all.

Contrary to Ziggy the Disempowered's fatalistic stance, each of us can make meaningful real improvements to our own, our community's and our country's existence, adding to some of the positive examples being set elsewhere instead of throwing up our hands and gobbling all the more.
