SA has successfully established two relevant facts. Firstly that renewables need sufficient backup power on standby to cover the fluctuations in supply. And secondly that it isn't commercially viable to own, staff and maintain a backup power plant that only runs for a few days a year.
This little 'gotcha' would have been blinding obvious to an engineer or an economist... but is, apparently, beyond the wit of the political classes. Yet now we think those same political classes will be able to dig us out of the hole they've dug.
