    milesg & george_a, thankyou both for your informative responses.
    As you say milesg, the most prudent course of action will be to consult a tax accountant regarding this as I dont want to get into anything too dodgy. I dont s'pose you could recommend anyone?
    george_a, I was thining along the same lines as what you suggested that I could for example include a couple of dividend paying stocks in my portfolio so as to at least show some dividends, and then once that is offset against the interest on the loan the remainder is treated as negative gearing and offset against my 9-5 job income.
    And also I am assuming that with margin lending, even though they say interest is tax deductible they still offer for example OXR,

    currently OXR is not paying a dividend so therefore wouldn't be tax deductible?
