As for the manipulation, I'm not so sure mate.
Surely its just a case of holders keen to see what the imminent 2017 drilling program is going to look like and new buyers are wanting a piece of the action too.

Buying is not a frenzy by any stretch, but neither is the stock being (and as you said) regrettably put up for sale. Consequently, transactions are sparse and price movements are pretty dramatic.
