    Say if the average price used was $28 and BHP applied the 14% discount as they did last time the buyback price would be $24.08.

    The $24.08 consists of $2.50 capital retun and $21.58 FF dividend so to calculate tax gross up the FF div (/70*30) gives you $9.24 Franking.

    Add the FF Div and the franking = $30.83 * 15% tax (super fund) = $4.62 tax leaving $4.62 excess franking.

    Total paid is then buyback $24.08 + excess franking $4.62 = 28.70.

    So if you have a SMSF, in allocated pension mode or paying <15% tax buyback is a good thing plus on these calculations gives a $24.08 capital loss per share.
