I spoke to the company early this week and we discussed this exact issue. I can assure you GAP does not intend to buy back shares if they rally materially above current level. Tney see their shares at undervalued and while there is not good value acquisition they will use what they feel is a little excess cash to reduce shares on issue. The point was made , which is missed in the above article , is that they are always looking at acquisitions , but haven't come across anything that is good value. In my view , bad acquisitions are a key reason why shareholder is decimated and company are often pressured by shareholders / institutions to attempt to buy growth, but my experience this ends up a mistake more often than a success
It's seems to me the management of gap are very clear on what they are doing and intend to buy back shares only at a price that they consider to be undervalued
