I also was with HSBC now with etrade. I have been experiencing similar problems with orders.
If you cancel or amend orders, your account balance is not updated automatically. I rang them up once and it took over 5 hours to rectify the problem.
I am moving my holding with them to another broker this week. Your posts made me realise, I am not the only one who have been experiencing problems with them.
