There is substantial advantage in BHP using a lean and flexible entity like APG. APG can dream/fiddle/develop to their heart's content. That sort of licence is not easy in a large organisation.... where you need to constantly present weekly reports, attend meetings, do OH&S audits and justify any expenditure with a predictable return.
The only reason APG has got to where it is is because it has been free of the corporate constraints that suppresses any creativity that might exist in individuals (thanks to long suffering shareholders!). Can you imagine JW grabbing the welding torch in BHP??? I don't think so! The unions would have downed tools years ago!
APG's characteristic as a lean innovative organisation is precisely what BHP needs during these formative phases. As we move into large scale plant construction ... that's when "big company" modus operandi becomes important.
BHP should give APG some reign until the demo plant is built. Then take us over!
That's just my (somewhat coloured) opinion!!
