As a student of Modern Day Australian History the more I learn the more I realise that our political system with a Senate elected by proportional representation has grossly impeded the development of this great country. During the Whitlam years of 1972 to 1975 the then energy minister Rex Connors had a bill passed through the house of reps known as The National Pipeline Bill, this pipeline at a cost of 2 billion dollars was going to pipe gas from the NW shelf in WA around Australia servicing all main cities and centres. Funding was blocked in the senate and Connors was forced to try and seek funding elsewhere. Malcolm Fraser who was opposition leader at the time and whos numbers in the senate caused the rejection of borrowing the monies through the normal channels has now directly caused this almost criminal debacle purely and simply for cheap political gain, and a national summit regardless of the good intentions would be destroyed in that cess pit of the senate without a doubt.
