    Olympic Dam goes green

"NEARLY one-fifth of the energy used in the expanded Olympic Dam mine operation will be free of greenhouse gas emissions, under a plan by BHP. The company's chief operating officer of base metals, Roger Higgins, yesterday said his company could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than one million tonnes each year through improved technology at the mine.
BHP expects to begin the $5 billion expansion in 2009 and complete it by 2013, for production to begin. It plans to significantly reduce emissions through two main techniques, including using heat created from the mining process to produce green electricity.
Speaking while hosting a visit by Premier Mike Rann to the company's Escondida mine in Chile, Mr Higgins said: "It (the initiative) is critically important in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"What we are looking at is the way we can achieve the greenest project that we can, and that is part of what we have been discussing while on this trip."
Mr Higgins said other initiatives the company would investigate for the Olympic Dam expansion included:
CONSTRUCTION of a pipeline linking the project to the Moomba to Adelaide natural gas pipeline.
FAVOURING suppliers of green energy such as that created from wind, solar and hot rocks. ”
