Not really correct. All modern handheld XRF can analyse for gold with levels above about 100ppm (g/t)
Hence, good for measuring dore, jewelery or very high grade ores. No good for most gold deposits though.
1 think you could do is crush, weigh, pan and then XRF the pan concs, and weigh the dried pan conc. If you assume most of the gold has gone to the pan conc, you can then back-calculate a minimum gold grade of the original sample.
