Major lead, zinc mine to be developed in Yazd

TEHRAN –- Development of Mahdiabad lead and zinc mine located in the central province of Yazd will begin soon, an Industrial Development and Renovation Organization (IDRO) official said Saturday.
With over 200 million tons of lead and zinc reserves, the mine is the largest of its kind in the world, added Ahmad Harati-Nik.
Commenting on the rich mineral deposits in Yazd Province, the IDRO’s directorate head said that the nation’s most important projects in the mining sector are carried out in the region. He further referred to mining projects and industries around the province and explained, “In addition to the development of Mahdiabad mine, completion of a number of projects including the iron ore mine in Bafq, a charcoal iron production plant in Tabas as well as the iron agglomerate production in Ardakan are other industrial and mining projects included in the development plans of the province.”
He also announced that a steel mill with the nominal capacity of 650,000 tons will be built near Iran Alloy Steel Co. in Yazd.
