presumably the tree once it starts producing continues to do so for anumber of years with little further inputs. Crops require high energy input each year to plant and harvest and are subject to failure if conditions are not right. Efficient use of water may be another factor, the tree may develop a deeper root system and perhaps help reduce salinity.
