we did have fish markets and they did swim in the city rivers and people used to go fishing - it was very popular - and, yes, many ate the fish.
Catholics most certainly ate fish on Fridays - and, so did many other people - religious or not - they didn't think about it too much - they just ate fish.
One of the big changes was the late 1970's Vietnamese boat people - who brought a lot of seafood cooking with them.
Their fisherman were quite different - we wouldn't take small stuff - they basically took anything - or at least - maybe I called that wrong - because that's what I thought in the 80's when I lived on board and they used to give me little fish and squid etc..
thinking back on it - perhaps they just took a lot of the little fish anyway because they wouldn't have survived the netting - I don't know - either way - they took tiny fish.
I was parked up in Hemmant Creek (think it was Hemmant Ck) for quite a while getting a boat ready to take north - they used to drop by often - really nice people.
