Great point you make about travel times, it's absolutely horrendous in Melbourne even getting from the inner-city to the city! I absolutely believe it would be faster arriving from Bendigo than sitting on the Monash. It sounds like your kids have done well, that was a good buy.

I do have a problem with the argument however, that people should just move further away. It might be cheaper to buy something or rent further away from the city, but the rest of that money goes towards travel!

Whether you travel by train or drive, the costs are insane. Petrol, parking, tolls, and traveling via public transport costs more the further away you live from the city. I hear about how our generation should give up on our dreams, but give us a decent transport system and some decent roads and maybe we'd be ok with living further out. Many of us realise that we'll be no better off financially, the argument just doesn't make sense when you add up the costs.
