I posted earlier about living in the suburbs and having to pay a fortune in travel costs (on congested roads and trains).
I guess you were lucky you didn't have to have mobile phones back then! You could also buy a fridge and tv and couch and it would last you 40 years. I'm forever having to replace something because it's broken or falling apart, that's why we keep having to buy stuff! I don't remember my parents ever having to buy new things all the time, things were built to last forever.
Some of us try not to upgrade our phones, but they're built to die on us every couple of years. We got 3 years out of our tv - 3 years! And then I had to upgrade my antenna too when I got a new tv because I had some old thing on my roof that wasn't compatible with the new tv! We don't even have the option of buying things second hand like you did, things don't last that long - technology changes so rapidly.
