I managed to sneak into the Adelaide Pain Conference yesterday to see Mustafa Atee present.
Just prior to Mustafa I also saw Linda McAuliffe from Latrobe University present her presentation on pain - specifically older people with Dementia
Linda presented a tick sheet of 24 items call POAK which was used by carers and nurses as part of the study (the 24 items were based on recommendations from 20 specialists from around the world) with a scoring of 1 for yes to pain,0 for no pain and 0 for don't know.
To Summarise her presentation, she advised that different scores were received based on the experience of the person validating the pain - 1st year nurses scored lower, yet 3rd year nurses scored higher for the same patient which skewed results and led to biase.
A registered nurse raised her hand and complimented Linda on her tick sheet as she had used it
Mustafa then got up to present and at least a half dozen phone cameras came out and started snapping away - right away I knew this product had the audience interested.
first slide - 47.5 million people have dementia world wide with a new case every 3 seconds (Don't get me started on other opportunities for this app - the mind boggles)
Epat app - 42 items across 6 domains (The face - fully automated, Voice, Movement,Behaviour,Activity and Body)
Whilst nothing new, Mustafa did highlight the Bupa Multi centre implementation trial to be conducted in Victoria
End of the presentation the registered nurse who complimented Linda on her tick sheet was madly scribbling away. I am sure she left impressed
After the presentation, I managed to find the EPAT presentation stand (sorry going on memory here)
Our very own Phil Daffas (CEO) was manning the stand
In short I spent approx. 30 minutes with Phil and left very impressed and that the company is in good hands and that at todays close of 3.1 people are just giving it away
Key Points of the chat
1. He has been blown away by the response received from the 3 day pain conference
2. In discussions with other professionals they advised multiple different ways in which the app can be put to use - from home care, to pain centre, to hospital, to emergency ward (where in patients in emergency take a selfie and people get seen - highest rating first)
3. Phil used to work with Bupa in both Australia as well as the UK, so has the contacts should the (Bupa Multi centre implementation trial go well ) of which he is very confident
4. He is excited by the work with IBM and the possibilities that can bring
5. Linda (refer above) visited the stand and asked Phil whether there is an opportunity to work together
Phil then took the time to show me the app on his phone and how it worked and this gave me more confidence right people/right time
Whilst I am not in the medical field, I am in IT and this was another interesting - Big DATA
Once volume has gone through the App they will be able to accurately prescribe medicine and will be able to advise how many percentage points on the pain scale (low/moderate/Medium/High) that the pain levels will go down - wont the pharmaceutical companies enjoy this (Phil just gave a big smile)
All in all very glad I went and this gave me further confidence in my investment (from IPO)
