No you don't, you can invest as little as $1000 into an S&P500 or an asx 200 index.
Thats the point of the 10year study I quoted, with all those things you mention, the hedge funds still under performed the inactive investors due to trading costs and management fees.
On average the hedge funds earned 2.2%pa for their investors, the index generated 7.1%pa
