It's a moment in time conception. God in our imagination has evolved from a general amorphous concept into animism, to an invisible force of protection against forces of harm, to elemental forces such as mighty mountains, volcanos, thunder storms, to a pantheon of gods such as the Greek mythologies, etc.
It wasn't until the Egyptians produced possibly the first monotheistic god figure which then became the basis of the Jewish forms of God, that we had a being that could be adapted from relative indifference to the individual or non-ruling class to a caring God. The adaption to a God for all then took on the characteristics of the god kings, only more fatherly. The priest or ruling clergy became the only conduit to God and thus God was made in their male image.
In this age no preacher, clergy, minister, pope, priest, nun, mullahs, etc, or religious performers need exist. Their age is past and as such God will begin to appear less anthropomorphic over time.
God is a concept that will evolve, if such a word can be used, for as long as humans exist. Today we are still under the predominant influence of Christianity, Islam. Both religions have a concept of God from a very distant past. A patriarchal being, fatherly and conceived in our image as was the most comprehensible form and understanding of that age.
The reality would be that if God exists and I tend to believe there is no other possibility, a belief held without any real conception apart from this God being pure abstraction and therefore unknowable, unthinkable and pure imagination when conceived. Future religions I believe, will remove the anthropomorphic version of God.
Humans have no real idea why they are here - not so sure that this is true.
Experience and common sense clearly shows there is no father figure "God" interested and involved in Human affairs This is your assessment using your own criteria. Some differing criteria may be enacted.
So, what is it that draws so many .. most ? .. to wonder "what's it all about" It's hardwired. The most difficult journey is not accepting a belief in God but finding evidence for that belief within religion.
So, what is it that draws so many .. most ? .. to wonder "what's it all about" at certain times but recedes to the back room for most of our lives ? We are always busy just surviving, fulfilling our needs. If one feels spiritual a few minutes each day then all is not lost.
