Beware of calling them BOTS - I know that a few platforms for SMSF and other smaller aggregated funds use a platform that seeks to be fair to purchasers who place bids through their platform and the funds don't pay brokerage on each trade but over the whole order or some even over a quarter and value transacted. So if I wanted to invest say $10,000 in one of these funds the order would be buying small allocated parcels in the ratio of that fund if that is the way it keeps balanced...
So not all the small order volumes are Bots ... They look like bots but are actually funds trying to allocate new capital in and out... Or a whole lot of funds accessing a specific platform.
