I'm not a director of a public company. However I do know quite a few and most are without doubt persons of very high quality.

It amazes me the amount of vitriol directed at some company directors by people on this site. While there are some bad apples I beleive most do honestly have the shareholders best interests at heart. Many also have large shareholdings far above that of those who question everything they do.

It is also worth pointing out that it is not that easy for directors to trade in the stocks. The ASIC is pretty clear on this. It is also worth noting that many board positions are not the high paid jobs they are made out to be. Many directors would not receive much more than $10-$20,000 pa.
