I'm not from a medical background, just a middle class bogan sparky.. but from what I understand is that our skin (the largest external organ) is also our first line of defense when it comes to infections. It's contains a large number immune cells that help protect our body.
Admedus has a small slide that illustrates how they combine their tech with this delivery method. There is plenty of info out there in regards to skin immunity that's worth reading up on.
