I actually believe that the gap continually being created is more cautionary. E.g. an investor (a) buys stock available in morning, then fills the underlying gaps i.e. 58c, 57.5c, 57c, 56.5c. Patiently waits but maintains the gap as retail are often hesitant to buy up a gap as they figure they are paying too much. Then an opportunity arises as such this afternoon, an announcement or process rather than sensitivity - they use this as a potential catalyst to draw out more impatient holders.
Regards, NL.
p.s. you may also notice that the first buy up of the day then becomes the gap price on buy !! ~20k bought, now 20k sits - thus how much has even an investor lost today ? (zero) Only gained !!
