When the initial roaster was put in I dont think the problem was the lack of sulfur per se. The total sulfur content of the ore was always suitably high but a lot of this total content is tied up with complex compounds that do not burn. Essentially this means that not all of the sulfur is available in the roasting process and the heat generation potential of the ore as a whole is reduced. (My understanding anyway; its been a few years since I studied chemistry!!)
I think at one stage when Randgold was operating they actually had the roaster too hot (i.e. too much diesel) and they pretty much melted the bottom out; not pretty.
