Need a rooster. If you have neighbors get a quiet rooster. Guy next door got a rooster about a quarter the size of his hens. A. he was quiet (a fancy non crow or soft crow rooster) B. He kept the hens happy.
Let them roam the yard else the pen will become a dirt patch. Get a chicken loving dog to keep the foxes and eagles away.
