The nickel boom is not finished. Keep your stock and tell your brother, that, if he is classifed as a trader by the ATO he can claim his trading loss against his ordinary income.
The downside, of course, is that in the future, when and if he makes a profit on a stock held for more than twelve months, he will need to prove to the ATO that it was not a trading stock.
