It's not so much the type of project, but the scale and who's involved. Smaller government projects will often have aconex mandated, even if only a couple of $mil. You do find a few more builders and clients entering larger scale projects through residential work though... and they're often disasters! For aconex to work well, all the players need a bit of experience working in the modern world, and a lot of smaller contractors are still just getting on top of email. We're doing quite a few 20-100m apartment projects and all on aconex which we strongly advise the client to use. I've worked on a few sub $10m projects that didn't use it and they were horror shows - in part because builders and contractors can be a bit more old-school (to put it politely).
I'm an architect, and have worked across small residential expansions to billion dollar institutional and infrastructure projects. Aconex was love at first use.
