Hi Miles
No sytem of tax or social welfare is perfect.
There are always exceptions to the rule which unfairly disadvantage some, and give others an undeserved gain.
The fact is though that the baby boomers are all around retiring age and the gvt is trying to get them to put as much as possible into super so that they will not be on pensions down the track.
The number of baby boomers who will retire and otherwise qualify as "Old age pensioners" in the very near future is staggering, and anything the gvt can do to ensure these people are self sufficent in their retirement is a good thing.
The compulsory super levy introduced in recent times will help alleviate this pressure in years to come.
But it has been in place too short a time to really benefit the boomers.
They need a quick fix to get their fund balances up to something meaningful right now so they don't rely on gvt handouts for their retired lives.
Better for them to "not pay tax ever again" (although that is an overstatement) than for the gvt to be PAYING THEM a pension every fortnight.
And dont forget, we are all living longer now well.
Agree that not taxing the funds would also be a good thing.
Cheers
