Australian cattle producers will seek $600 million in compensation from the Commonwealth government for losses suffered when the Gillard Government banned live cattle exports to Indonesia, in a landmark class action starting in Federal Court this week.

Led by Northern Territory producer Brett Cattle Company, the group action is being taken against former agricultural minister Joe Ludwig. It includes scores of cattle producers, transport and shipping companies who suffered catastrophic losses when the former Labor Government issued the blanket six-week ban in July 2011 shortly after ABC’s Four Corners aired footage of Australian animals being mistreated in Indonesian abattoirs.

Is Wellard seeking compensation in these proceedings? If so would compensation be flowing to the listed entity or to predecessor entities which were not listed? WLD could do with some funds for debt reduction.
