SYDNEY (Dow Jones)--The U.K.'s Gem Diamonds has taken a stake in Australian miner Kimberley Diamond Company (KIM.AU) in preparation for a full takeover bid, The Australian Financial Review reports Wednesday.

Gem Diamonds has already done due diligence on Kimberley, and two major shareholders sold stakes in the company this week, the newspaper reports, without citing sources.

Kimberley Diamond was placed on trading halt Tuesday.
