Australia's capital was originally located in Melbourne. The Canberra location was a compromise between Melbourne and Sydney. The ACT was carved out of NSW to create a site for the new capital.

If you believe being public servant is non-productive, should you not resign from your job and look for a job that is "productive" ?

It is fashionable to knock public service, but the people who indulge in this don't think deep and far enough.

Police officers are public servants. Soldiers are public servants. Jails are manned by public servants. Just to name a few.

parliamentarians are public servants. Tony Abbott would be out of a job if there are no "public servants parliamentarians", among others.
