The best thing about offshore production would have to be the regulatory hurdles a start up grower would face in Australia.
Look at the lengths they went to in isolating poppies for security and setting them up in an easily controlled confined area of Australia. (Is Tasmania still part of Australia?) anyway. I can see problems with having growers set up willy nilly because it would in the end be a costly exercise from a security and licensing and product control point of view. All hypothetical of course, but given the ready available supply that can come from OS, I think the authorities will drag their feet on this. The shear size of the market in US and Canada brings economies of scale right into play, and shipping a container load over to us would still be saving a pot load.
