Fortunately with lobar pneumonia the pathonomonic signs of consolidation with will be apparent on ausculation with a stethoscope and visible on a plain chest X-ray. However I do not believe there is any characteristic cough that could be associated with lobar pneumonia. It can't work reliably for this illness.
