The nub of the problem is an evaluation of all loans made to the US housing sector. That is, do the job as it should have been done to start with. Once that is done then the size of the problem will be known or close to it. Too much effort for US financial industry. They would rather shore up the problem and that means sticking your finger in the dyke and hoping you have enogh fingers
