Mud is also used to provide hydrostatic pressure to prevent formation fluids from entering the well bore. It helps control pressure by offsetting the hydrocarbons pressure and the rock formations. Weighing agents are added to the drilling fluids to increase density which in turn controls pressure on the well walls.
This last use seems to be the use which 88E will be needing. It is nice to know the pressure is so high in Ice 2 that the mud will be needed to control the oil pressure.
