I, and members of my family donate blood and plasma at the Australian red cross. In my opinion, once $$ come into it, a person might be tempted to answer the disclosure questions dishonestly (e.g. have you had unprotected sex recently? Had a recent tattoo?) because all they want is the payment. I'd prefer to receive blood and plasma from true volunteers rather than desperate poor people who are less likely to even eat regular meals. I hope the rules for frequency of donations over there are like that of Australia, where the gap between donations is 12 weeks for full blood and 2 to 3 weeks for plasma. Otherwise, these poor people would become even more depleted. Four Corners exposés often paint a negative picture, hopefully things are not as unethical as portrayed on the ABC last night.
