The link above illustrates why Tassal is becoming unpopular in Tassie. They place their bottom line about the livelihoods of local fisherman and our coastal ecosystems.
FYI, Huon Aquaculture (HUO) has far more responsible practices. They no longer use the old pens that attract seals and they are trying to go further offshore with their pens which has less impact on the sea life.
The new Tassal pens being built at Okehampton on the East coast are very close to shore in shallow water. It is much warmer here than previous farming sites (the site was chosen because it was formerly a mussel lease), and many people are sceptical salmon will do well there. It is a very popular area for recreational fishing.
