Further to your statement. It is the harmful UV rays that cause skin cancer although some people with certain skin types are more susceptible.
Melanin is a good thing for the body, there has been no negative research to my knowledge re melanin causing skin cancer, but a lack of it certainly contibutes along with excess exposure of UV rays.
