JP Morgan's Saalmann Says Macquarie's Business Model Is Sound
By Gene Otani and Stuart Kelly
Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Craig Saalmann, a Sydney-based credit strategist at JPMorgan Chase & Co., comments on the impact of the U.S. subprime loan crisis on Macquarie Bank Ltd., Australia's biggest securities firm.
On Macquarie Bank's business model:
``We like Macquarie for its earnings and we like it for its underlying model. There are some people out there, particularly offshore, that have speculated or questioned the earnings model and the pipeline going forward, and whether it's going to drive the earnings that we've seen previously. We think it will, we think the Macquarie model is a very sound one.
``More importantly we think it's misunderstood by a lot of offshore investors. At the same time, the company at its annual shareholders' meeting a few weeks ago did point to a very strong 2008 and a very strong investment banking pipeline. Certainly you've got to listen to management and what they're saying about future earnings.''
