Yes i know Gunnedah well, used to have a mate lived there, a well known family in the area i believe, you may know of, his name was Joe Worboys (hope i got the spelling right)
We worked together at Telstra (Telecom then) and he went on to work on the towers, working on the m'wave dishes, equipment, etc..
Sorry to hear about your Mum's illness, you've had a hard time of it yourself..
Funny you mention California, i have quite a connection to California myself.
My Mum's sister, my Aunty Gwen, was the first Aussie war bride from the 2nd ww to marry a US service man, and was quite famous at the time.
She married him and moved to San Diego, where she lived until she passed
She was a celebrity over there initially, being on various tv shows and in the media a lot
My mum had a scrapbook of all her newspaper clips etc, but i couldn't find it when Mum passed sadly..
Her name was Gwen Fargo (Moad was her maiden name) she married a rocket scientist from NASA, and i still have a first cousin over there i've never met yet..
My Mum's other sister Norma also moved over to San Diego to live for 15 years as well, and run a catering business there. I've still got the beautiful American college ring she gave me years ago, that someone left in the wash room, but never came back to claim. (my good fortune) haha
It's a small world alright..
And yeah i love it here on my hideaway acres, very peaceful and tranquil, just the way i like it !!
I'm at Telegraph Point, about 20kms North of Port
I'm an ex landscaper as well so have been very busy here as you can imagine
I have a virtual orchard here too with a large variety of fruit and nut trees, plus chooks, and my own patch of rainforest and running creek complete with bell birds and heaps of Satin Bower Birds too
The birdlife here is amazing actually, i'm in the right place for me !!

Sadly her singing days are over now with that throat illness she has..
