When I looked into BIG in the beginning I too was confused about how they made money from the Big Review TV platform on Youtube. Then I realised that wasnt really what they were selling. As the company itself states its service to clients is to "View your edited video content and select which version you'd like to use. We'll send your video content to you in a secure file and you can use your content anywhere you wish and start to truly engage your audience."
Video is the new killer app, made possible by high speed broadband rollouts on both mobile and fixed networks globally. Consequently, companies are moving from text/photo based advertisements to video advertisements because they are more engaging and deliver a higher customer sales conversion. Those video ads that so rudely interrupt you when playing a game on your mobile, or start playing down the side of a webpage you are reading, or appear in your Facebook newsfeed, or the ad that interrupts half way through watching Simon's Cat comic (so annoying!), or plays at the start of a Youtube video - these all require video content to be produced. And BIG is delivering a cost effective video creation service that allows customers to utilise this video content as they see fit, and to partake in the global shift to video advertising. On Facebook, Youtube, Google Adsense, websites, affiliate advertising, those TV screens playing video ads in your local coffee shop .....
Will they ever make money by being a TV platform for consumers to watch video ads off their own bat, and to leave reviews? Who knows. At the moment, who cares? They have a successful business doing what they are doing. The rest, if it happens, will be icing on the cake.
And if you think video advertising is just a fad, then you are sadly mistaken. Its here to stay.
