Witch is correct that there is no public guarantee of bank deposits in Australia. Nor is there a bank deposit insurance scheme such as in the USA.
Various RBA mechanisms are in place to deal with very short term liquidity crisis in a single bank - usually arising from mis-management.
There are however, no measures to protect deposits in the event of systemic failure of Australian banks.
That is not alarmist - it is just the way it is.
Witch's assertion that your money might be safer in the stock market does not even merit a comment.
