re: bad press..speed cameras lie.. dct - "inappropriate" speed may well cause many accidents, but does normal enforcement aim at inappropriate speed or speed in excess of posted limits?
The much vaunted study in Adelaide to prove that 10kmh increases risk by 4 or 5 fold or whatever is a study that would not see the light of day in many industries. The calculation of vehicle speed in the accident cases was by people such as yourself who have been trained by govt agencies and work for the enforcement agencies - that you all believe you are correct is without question, but the calculations arent based on prospective data, it is all retrospective eductaed guessing. I work in the pharmaceutical industry, and I believe I could run a trial on a drug that we produce and do it honestly, but do I - no! we get independant people to run the trial, we blind them to results untill trial end and use controls. If the pharma co's developed the trial, ran the trial, published the trial, and then used it for advertising - we could pull the wool over the uneducated public eyes but not the professionals.
I havent seen 350 accidents, but I do 35k a year have seen at least 10 major prangs, and all were caused by inattentiveness and plain stupidity - overtaking in too small a space with a 4 cyl car for eg. - I bet the majority of those accidents had speed filled out on the form by the police officers.
To every complex problem there is a simple and seemingly obvious solution which is Wrong! - Occum was a fool!
