Yours is a very good question although simple but difficult.
If an individual level leaves a life for the better of him or her/ self then effort is turned towards within. Once an individual assesses oneself and has a mapping of what the requirements are in terms of seeking a higher degree of knowledge or enlightenment then a civilised nature is open to be developed. Philosophically not all individual beings can attain the same higher degrees of thought management.
The education of the soul comes about when the appetites are in an arrangement of reasonable thought that assembles the structures of the mind into a natural end cause.
Religions do not allow a person for a personal development but the opposite is true as it teaches man his evilness and creates a fear like emotion capable of destroying any internal direction. Once the seed of fear is implanted the emotional pull towards a natural disposition is thus eliminated because the recognition of what nature is somehow distanced.
